In-mold labeling is the process of applying the product label while the product or - or if the product is a container - while the container is being manufactured. Because the label is molded into the plastic, it becomes integrated with, and therefore is a part of, the product or container. In-mold labeling (IML) is one of the more noteworthy advances in molding technology.
The in-mold labeling process requires special photo-quality labels that are placed in the mold. As the molding machine works through the molding process, the label is actually molded into the plastic, resulting in a high quality label that is an integral part of the product or container itself. The benefits are many - the label is integrated into the product, meaning it cannot be removed or altered, and the labeling step of the production process is eliminated, saving time and money. Perhaps most importantly, the product's name and other identifying design elements, including the product logo and safety and use instructions, for example, are displayed prominently on the product itself, preserving its brand throughout the life of the product.
Hi-More International produces equipment for this molding process and has perfected this technology, producing advanced systems that are cost-efficient and that produce a high-quality product.
In-mold labeling is suitable for hundreds of plastic products, including: paint cans, yogurt cups, meat packaging, cheese packages, butter and margarine containers, milk cartons and more. The photos at right show some of these products, and you can view the video below to see how the process works.
